From a British Citizen (Immigrant) to a Fellow British Citizen

Dear Fellow Citizen,

I hope this letter finds you well.

As immigrants, many of us did not choose to leave our homelands. Often, we were forced to flee due to wars and conflicts that ravaged our countries. These circumstances were beyond our control.

Our homelands were rich in natural resources, such as oil, gas, gold, and diamonds, spanning the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. However, instead of being a blessing, these resources often became a curse. The colonial era saw many nations occupied and their wealth extracted, leaving behind impoverished societies.

Even today, it is difficult to witness treasures from Iraq, Egypt, and Syria displayed in museums far from their rightful homes, often taken during times of conflict and colonial rule.

Understanding How We Got Here

History provides some answers. Decisions like the Balfour Declaration in 1948 significantly altered the Middle East, displacing communities and creating tensions that persist to this day. In Lebanon, where I was born, this had a direct impact, as we saw neighbors displaced overnight.

Western involvement in the region has often exacerbated these issues, whether through military interventions or support for destabilizing forces. For example, allegations that groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda have been armed and funded during conflicts in Syria raise significant concerns about accountability.

A Call for Constructive Solutions

Forcing displaced people out of their host countries, especially when their displacement is linked to global policies, risks further division and unrest. Instead, we should focus on shared challenges: improving healthcare, education, infrastructure, and addressing the rising cost of living.

Many immigrants contribute tirelessly to the UK’s economy, particularly in healthcare, transport, and hospitality. Their work ensures society continues to function. Imagine the impact if these workers collectively took a day off to highlight their contributions. Perhaps this could lead to a national “Immigrants Day” where we celebrate the essential roles they play in our communities.

Moving Forward Together

To my fellow British citizens, I ask that we engage in dialogue to find solutions to the challenges we all face. Division will not serve any of us. Instead, let us focus on what unites us and work together toward a stronger future for all.

Warm regards,
