Press Release: Workers Party London Branch Stands with Farmers: A Fair Deal for Agriculture

London, 10 February 2025

The Workers Party London Branch fully supports the farmers protesting today in Westminster against the proposed inheritance tax changes on agricultural land. The government’s plan to impose a 20% tax on farms valued over £1 million threatens the future of family-run farms and the stability of Britain’s agricultural sector.

Sam Habeeb, Secretary of the Workers Party London Branch, expressed strong support for the protest, stating:

“Farming is the backbone of our country’s food supply and rural economy. These families work tirelessly, yet they are now facing a tax that could force them to sell their land just to meet government demands. This is neither fair nor sustainable.”

Many farmers already struggle with rising costs, supply chain challenges, and market pressures. Introducing an additional financial burden risks driving small farms out of business, leading to further consolidation of land under large corporations. Habeeb emphasized:

“This policy will not just affect farmers—it will impact food security and rural communities across the country. The government must rethink this approach and engage with those directly affected to find a fairer solution.”

The Workers Party London Branch calls for the immediate withdrawal of these tax proposals and urges policymakers to support British farmers with policies that protect family-run farms and ensure long-term agricultural sustainability.

We stand in solidarity with today’s protesters and affirm our commitment to a fairer economic system that supports working people in all sectors.
